Project HUGS

Organizational History:

HALos, Inc. (Help After Loss), a grassroots, not-for-profit grief resource and referral organization was founded in 2000 through the cooperative efforts of several bereaved parents. HALos became incorporated in February of 2001 and obtained its 501 (c) (3) status in July 2003. HALos initially targeted its services for families suffering the traumatic event of the death of their child. In 2004, HALos Board Of Directors recognized the need to expand its definition of "loss" and services to include loss caused by a variety of traumatic events affecting children and their families. Following this decision in 2004, HALos mission statement was expanded to assist children and their families experiencing crisis or loss to reclaim balance in their lives. To provide such a resource project HUGS ( Help Understanding Grief Situations) was created.

Project HUGS ( Help Understanding Grief Situations):

Based in the understanding that individuals who have overcome tremendous obstacles of their own are positive role models for others. HUGS' is operated by a group of volunteers called "Special Friends" primarily serving the youth of Chenango County. When a referral is received, a volunteer is assigned to work with the family. Utilizing the family development approach, each individual family's strengths and needs are assessed and a comprehensive support plan is made.

HALos Resources:

HALos' currently collaborated with educators, community leaders, mental health and healthcare professionals. We receive referrals from the local public school systems, and collaborate with Broome Chenango Canine Help Group. This organization provides registered therapy dogs to families when needed. Opportunity to pet, touch, and talk to these therapy dogs has proven beneficial to some individuals. Two licensed Clinical Social Workers are also available for consultation with the "Special Friend" throughout the initial planning for and the tracking of the HUGS enrolled families. Referrals to mental health agencies are made whenever such services are warranted.
